Rice and Beans - TM5

This recipe is adapted from Jamie Oliver's 15 minute meal cookbook but instead of doing it in 15 minutes I did it using the Automated Cooking Function for Boiled Rice.  We had it as per Jamie's book with tortillas (homemade of course) and I made the salsa he had in the cookbook (delicious) and also marinated some chicken breasts in 1 tsp each of smoked paprika, ground cumin, ground coriander and salt along with some oil then fried them in a pan.  I loved the combination but really loved using TM5 to do the rice.  This would make a great side dish to a meal or curry.  Hope you guys enjoy it too.  Eb x

Please note, when I shared my biryani recipe for the TM5 I received a number of comments/emails from TM31 owners requesting a version for their machine or miffed at me for putting out a recipe that could only be done in a TM5.  This recipe, like the biryani recipe, is specific to the TM5 due to the boiled rice function.  If you would like to try to create a version in the TM31 please do and I will happily share it with our folks.  Please remember this is a free site for our followers and I share my recipes to help as many people as possible be inspired to cook.  We currently have over 300 recipes on our site and only TWO of them are specific for the TM5.  My TM31 is in no way inferior to any machine and gets used every single day.

  • 130g brown onion, peeled and halved
  • 10g garlic cloves
  • 1-2 red chilli
  • 30g oil
  • 1-2 tbsp cumin seeds
  • 800g water or 1000g
  • 50g TMX Stock Paste
  • 1 fresh bayleaf
  • 400g basmati rice or 500g
  • Tin of kidney beans (rinsed and drained)
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

NOTE: I only made 400g rice with 800g water which was more than enough for us but if you are feeding a crowd you can add 500g rice to 1000g water.

Add onion, garlic and chillies to the bowl and chop on Speed 6 for 2 seconds.  Add oil and cumin and cook for 5 minutes at Varoma Reverse Speed 1.

Set your TM5 to Automated Cooking for Boiled Rice.  When asked to add water add 800g. Tap NEXT.  Add stock paste INSTEAD of salt, tap NEXT. Add bay leaf, tap NEXT and set Auto mode going.  This will now warm the water.

When prompted add your rice 400g, and also add your beans and lemon juice. Tap NEXT, continue with Auto mode.

We served this with tortillas, salsa, feta and chicken that had been bashed, marinated in 1 tsp each of smoked paprika, ground cumin, ground coriander and salt and olive oil.  Then fried in a pan.
